Water is at the heart of our planet and all the life that springs from it. It courses through our rivers, lakes, oceans, and underground reservoirs. Water sustains us, connecting us in ways that transcend borders and cultures. Yet, as we gather on March 22nd to honor World Water Day, we must confront a sobering reality: billions worldwide still lack access to clean, safe drinking water.
Let us focus on the United Nations’ sixth Sustainable Development Goal: Clean Water and Sanitation. This ambitious goal envisions a world in which everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status or location, has access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. With this goal in mind, we must understand that we have the power to raise awareness, initiate conversations, and advocate for policies that prioritize clean water and sanitation.
Our world is becoming more interconnected than ever, making the water crisis not only a challenge for those who lack access to clean water but rather a collective struggle that pleads for our attention. The UN reports that 2 billion people worldwide live without access to safe drinking water. But this daunting statistic is not meant to spark a feeling of hopelessness but rather to serve as a call for you to take action. World Water Day’s purpose is to remind us all that each drop of water can create a ripple effect and that we can inspire change in communities worldwide, starting here in Mexico.
Most of us reading this are fortunate enough to have access to clean water. Because of this, it is our responsibility to ensure that the next generations inherit a planet in which the pursuit of clean water is no longer a distant dream but rather a reality.
It has been 30 years since the first World Water Day. As we celebrate this important date in 2023, let us pledge to use water conscientiously and support initiatives that provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to those in need. Together, we can strive for a world where water is not a privilege but a fundamental human right.
