The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (DofE) is an award available to all 14-24 year olds and equips young people for life regardless of their background, culture, physical ability, skills and interests. Doing the Award is a personal challenge and not a competition; it pushes young people to their personal limits and recognises their achievements.
Since its launch over 60 years ago, the Award has inspired millions of young people to transform their lives. Through non-formal education and learning, the Award can play a critical role in a young person’s personal development. The Award equips young people for life and work and recognises that not all learning happens in the classroom. Young people also need experiences outside the classroom to become committed, responsible and fulfilled citizens of the world.
Here at the Edron we are the pioneers of the DofE International Award in Mexico and are currently the only school offering this wonderful opportunity to its students. We launched the Award last year with the year 10 students who are starting with the Bronze Award. We hope to see these students all the way through to the highest level, the Gold Award.
The expedition or adventurous journey aspect of the qualification saw our students embark on an adventure to Costa Rica where they successfully completed two expeditions. During the expedition they developed skills such as resilience, perseverance and enquiry based thinking. The Award also includes aspects of voluntary work and community service.
The International Award qualification fits perfectly with our skills and values based High Performance Learning framework and forms part of our commitment to developing the whole child and equipping them for the challenges of the 21st century.
